Ethnic China. Part One

Koguresci

The first contacts of the population of the Middle Chinese Plain with the tribes date back to the VII century BC, when the mountain zhuns invaded the territory of the Yan and Qi kingdoms. Later, in the second half of the first millennium BC, these tribes were united in an early state formation known as Joseon (kit. Chaoxian). At the beginning of the III century BC, power in Joseon was seized by a native of the hereditary possession of Yan Wang Man, who "gathered more than a thousand people and fled to the east, combing his hair and dressing in a barbaric manner." As a result of the campaign undertaken by Udi in 108 BC, the political independence of Joseon was eliminated, and the Han districts of Lolan, Lintun, Xuantu and Fanzhen were created on its territory. If before that, the existence of Joseon prevented the penetration of ancient Chinese further to the east, now they have come into direct contact with the population of the Korean peninsula.
According to Ban Gu, the indigenous inhabitants of Xuantu and Lolang counties were "barbarians of Joseon, Weimo and Gouli". Gouli is one of the names of the ancient Korean ethnic community of Goguryeo, which later created its own state in the northern part of Korea.
According to the legends of the Koguresans, their ancestor was Chumon, born the daughter of a river deity.

The connection of the Koguresans with the more northern Puyo (Chinese Fuyu) tribes noted in the Chumon myth is confirmed in the descriptions of their culture and way of life. The author of "Sangozhi" emphasizes that, "according to the ancient legends of the eastern barbarians, they (i.e., the Koguresans) were an offshoot of the Fuyu root; their language, and much more, are the same." As the researcher of the ethnic history of the Kogure people R. S. Jarylgasinova notes, this circumstance can be considered as evidence of the participation of northern — possibly Tungusic-Manchurian — components in the ethnogenesis of Kogure.

The basis of the economy of the Kogure tribes was agriculture. The choice of a place for a new "capital" was determined primarily by the presence of fertile lands in this area. Various cereals were cultivated, the main of which was, apparently, millet, as well as rice. In one of the burials, an image of a pile granary has been preserved (according to researchers, it indicates southern elements in the Goguryeo culture).

Along with this, horse breeding occupied a significant place in the economy of the Kogures. It is probably not by chance that the semantic determinative "horse" is present in the ancient Chinese hieroglyphic transcription of their ethnonym.
